Dark Genius Book Blast

Jamie Marchant Posted on September 15, 2017 by Jamie MarchantSeptember 11, 2017 2

Read about an exciting new book by H. Peter Alesso and enter to win a $25 Amazon gift card below.

To the insatiably curious—science is the greatest adventure. So, when scientists at CERN announced the discovery of the ‘God’ particle in 2012, all the world wondered, “How did they find it?”

A decade later, despite his past academic failures and egregious family circumstance, Andrew Lawrence embarked on a journey of discovery, competing against rival scientists to be the first to solve the greatest unsolved mystery of the universe—dark matter—and win the ultimate prize; the Nobel.

Emma Franklin, a PhD candidate at Harvard, developed software for detecting particle reactions using a quantum computer. To the amazement and excitement of the scientific community, her work revealed two possible bumps in the energy curve that were not predicted by any established theory.

At MIT, Lawrence created a model that predicted the scattering processes of a dark matter supersymmetry particle. Though his early work was disparaged, he improved his theory and found that it predicted the data Emma had discovered. Their professional collaboration deepened into a personal relationship, but when critical data was stolen, Emma found evidence that incriminated Lawrence. Though she withheld the impeaching material from the authorities, she felt she could no longer trust him.

Despite their troubled partnership, and notwithstanding the complexities of nature, Lawrence and Emma persevered against the egos, jealousy, and envy of rivals, on their exhilarating quest to find the ‘Holy Grail’ of physics.

Excerpt

In one well-lit corner, Professor Stanley Prost sat at his desk studiously examining a computer screen. His long straight nose, jutting prominent chin, and carbon black eyes, gave the appearance of a man not to be trifled with. He held his hand to his brow, masking his eyes, as if to conceal his innermost thoughts. However, his red pitted skin and the twitchy lips destroyed any semblance of a distinguished pose. His overweight frame and slumped shoulders made him look like a bloated figure despite his close-cropped hair and clean-shaven face. An expensive, but ill-fitting suit, hung like a sack over his body leaving an overall appearance of discomfort.

While Prost rapidly slid his finger across the computer screen, Lawrence stood waiting like a statue. He let his gaze wandered to the scene visible from the window—scampering students making their way on their personal college adventure.

Finally, without extending his hand, or looking directly at his visitor, Prost ordered, “Sit.”

“Thank you, Professor,” said Lawrence in a clear strong voice, despite a peculiar stir of emotions—doubt, tension, apprehension. He had prior experience with this man—with unhappy consequences.

Prost leaned forward and curled his lip as he spat out the words, “Your postdoc appointment was made by the Professor Lloyd—during my absence—without any input from me.”

Lawrence’s eyes darkened to match his tousled hair, but he remained quiet for what seemed a portentous moment. He clenched his teeth and was self-conscious of a bead of sweat on his brow.

Prost waved his right hand in the air and said, “I took no pleasure in the failing grades I gave you, some years ago. Your dismissal from MIT was unfortunate, but I wasn’t the only professor who was disenchanted with a prodigy who skipped classes, took exams cavalierly, and disrupted class with impertinent questions.”

Lawrence shifted in his chair, uncomfortably.

I’m to be rebuked for the sins of the past.

certain in my life. Firstly, I am a cursed halfling—part faerie,
part human. Another thing I know is I hate faeries. They are

The third thing I know—and it is

darkness that cursed her mother and, now, her half-brother is laying
dormant in her too.
It grows stronger with each passing day.
Left with two options, she must choose to fight and bring
peace back to Grandelione or plunge into a world of darkness and
murder.

As Eliana flees, she makes startling
discoveries about herself and her real identity, as well as the truth
about her upbringing.
Eliana meets many beings from the
Faerie world. Some would die to keep her safe, while others would

a fulfilling career as an Author has been one of my greatest dreams.
I write because creating something that didn’t exist before is as
close to magic as I’ll ever get. All you need is imagination.
I’ve always been passionate about storytelling and impressed by the
influence it has on people and the decisions they make in life. I
love engaging with the projects I work on, diving headfirst into the
research, investigation, and production of stories I feel are worth
writing about. I am a curious and proactive Author, interested in
preserving the foundations set by classical literature by adapting
them to modern themes and trends.

Entromancy Book Tour

Jamie Marchant Posted on September 14, 2017 by Jamie MarchantSeptember 11, 2017 2

Welcome M. S. Farzan on the release of his cyberpunk thriller, Entromancy. Enter to win a $25 Amazon gift card below.

2076 is not a good year to be a special agent. A quarter of the world’s power runs on ceridium, a newly discovered element that has had the unintended consequence of spawning a new race of people, and several forms of magic that were once thought to have been forgotten. Eskander Aradowsi is an agent of NIGHT, a paramilitary force created to contain and control this new perceived threat, but he soon learns that not all within his organization is as it seems. A botched mission turns out to be the least of his troubles, when he unearths a plot that threatens the uneasy truce between the aurics and humans of San Francisco, and centers on a form of magic that toys with the very fabric of the universe: Entromancy.

Excerpt

“How many out there?” a voice buzzed through my earpiece.

I watched the city below carefully, standing stock still as the evening breeze whipped my coat behind me.  The bright neon lights formed an iridescent halo through the layer of fog that had begun to coalesce, but I could still pinpoint a handful of signal markers within the haze.  The ancient radio tower loomed behind me forlornly like a ruddy tuning fork sticking out of a concrete mound.

I tapped a button on my digitab, magnifying a selected portion of the cityscape through my lenses.  “Three,” I replied.  “Two on Columbus-Farrow and one downtown.”

“Pissing underrats.”

I grimaced at the racism, but said nothing.  Marking the three waypoints on my digitab’s city map, I hurried back to the cruiser bike.

“HQ wants you to prioritize the downtown storefront,” the voice continued.  “Intel says that it’s set to go nova first, and there’s no telling what these gutter trash will do when we expose them.”

I nodded to myself as I mounted the cruiser, passing a gloved hand over the vehicle’s blinking security console.  Its engine instantly came to life, cold blue light spilling out of the bike’s casing.

“Oh and, Nightpath,” my earpiece buzzed.  “Bring me a couple of knife-ears as souvenirs, will you?”

I tensed on the bike, disgusted by the snickering I could hear in the background.

“That’s enough, Striker,” I said curtly.

The laughter stopped abruptly.  “Just get it done,” the voice said, and the earpiece clicked.

Interview

  1. Tell us a little about yourself?

Thanks so much for inviting me to stop by! I’m a Muslim American author with a penchant for writing social justice-inspired science fiction and fantasy.  I have a Ph.D. in Cultural and Historical Studies of Religions and have taught Japanese martial arts for over ten years.  I’m also an avid gamer and have written and worked for high-profile video game companies and editorial websites such as Perfect World Entertainment, Electronic Arts, and MMORPG.com.

2. What are you reading at the moment? Would you recommend it to readers of this blog? Why?

I just finished S. L. Viehl’s Blade Dancer, a cyberpunk action adventure novel set in the Stardoc universe.  It’s extremely action-packed and fun, and I really appreciate the world building and complex racial themes.

3. Tell us something about how you write? i.e. are you a plotter or a pantser? Do you have any weird or necessary writing habits or rituals?

I’m definitely a plotter, sometimes to a fault.  I love writing outlines and thinking through different aspects of world building, magic and political systems, and character backstories.  When all – or most – of that is in place, I roll my sleeves up and get down to the actual business of constructing the narrative.

4. What else would you like readers to know about you or your work?

I really enjoy interacting with readers!  Please feel free to send me a question or tweet and I’m sure to respond!

5. Do you have a day job in addition to being a writer? If so, what do you do during the day?

I do!  I’ve worked in video games digital marketing and social media for quite some time.  My day job requires a lot of writing, which is fun, but I also do a lot of strategic planning and analytics.

6. What is your favorite writing tip or quote?

Write everywhere, and all the time.  It’s far too easy to ritualize the writing process, which can lead to stagnation or the false belief that you can only write in your favorite chair, at a prescribed time of day.  Train yourself to write even when you don’t feel like it.  Your manuscripts will thank you later!

7. Tell us a little about your plans for the future. Do you have any other books in the works?

Yes!  I’m currently working on Technomancy, the second book in The Nightpath Trilogy.  I’ve also just completed principal work on the manuscript for a separate young adult urban fantasy novel.

Sue Bentley, fantasy and gritty reality

Jamie Marchant Posted on September 13, 2017 by Jamie MarchantSeptember 11, 2017

Meet author Sue Bentley and read about her debute YA fantasy novel, We Other.

We Other

Jess Morgan’s life has always been chaotic. When a startling new reality cannot be denied, it’s clear that everything she believed about herself is a lie. She is linked to a world where humans – ‘hot-bloods’ – are disposable entertainment. Life on a run-down housing estate, her single mum’s alcoholism and violent boyfriend – become the least of her worries. Drawn into a new world of rich darkness, she finds herself torn between love, family and a growing sense of a powerful new identity.

Excerpt

Ninka was trying not to listen to the struggling hob’s squeals. It wasn’t the tiny faery’s death that bothered her; the matter of life and death in the Shadow Court was like everything else there, twisted and uncertain. It was the lengthy pleasure that Tweeter took in his task that she found so upsetting.

Added to this, in the midst of it all, Catelysma was jouncing her newest plaything on her knee. No one knew where the pretty baby had come from and no one was foolish enough to ask. It looked too well cared-for to be a forest foundling. But it was of no concern to any of the gathered fey that a mortal might be grieving her baby’s loss; mortals were fecund, if short-lived, and the mother could easily have another. The infant’s rounded features, flushed pink cheeks and soft, peach-skinned limbs were drawing murmurs of admiration from all those in attendance.

As Ninka looked more closely at the fitted garment that covered the baby from its neck down, her heart gave a lurch. Although muddy and grass-stained it was just possible to see the original pink colour and the faint design of dancing animals. Immediately, she guessed where it had come from.

‘She shall be known as, Aerith,’ Catelysma decided, a smile of satisfaction playing over her perfect features.

There were nods of approval from the scrags and boggarts clustered in the shadows. A grey phantasm drifted past, smoke-like limbs trailing and its mournful features wearing what passed for a smile.

Aerith smiled and gurgled, unconcerned by narrow eyes blinking at her from spiteful cat faces.

Ninka felt a shiver of fear for the little mortal. How soon before the Dark Lady tired of her and she became prey to the ravenous scrags and red caps? She watched as Catelysma placed a golden ball in the baby’s lap and made a languorous gesture with one slender white hand, setting a glamour on the ball, which instantly became a fluffy golden rabbit.

The infant’s lips pursed. She blew a loud raspberry as she clapped her chubby hands with pleasure.

‘How delightful, she is!’ Catelysma purred. ‘Eyes like cornflowers and tender pink lips.’

Nods and smiles rippled round the court. Ninka found herself smiling too. Aerith was indeed charming, but then new-born mortals brought into Faery usually were – at first.

‘Some pity…I beg.’ The wounded hob gave a loud moan, as Tweeter continued working with his curved bone blade.

Some of the faery host tittered. A few yawned. Many paid no attention to the little hob’s commonplace suffering, preferring the rare novelty of watching Catelysma petting the pretty infant.

Was the Dark Lady thinking of that other half-ling babe – the Forbidden? And what had become of it? Was it dead, and if so, did she mourn it? Was this what the show of maternity was about? Ninka’s thoughts began to wander.

The details of that event in the forest, which she alone had witnessed by accident, were imprinted deeply upon her. It would have far-reaching implications for the Shadow Court, the solitary fey and beyond if what she knew ever came to light. But that knowledge was caged within her, where it must stay buried. If Catelysma had even the slightest inkling that any fey knew her secret –her life would be worth less than a dandelion seed blowing on the breeze.

A bloated-bellied scrag nudged her, jerking her out of her reverie. ‘Pretty toothsome thing, ain’t it?’

‘Yes, very,’ she replied neutrally. The scrag’s eyes gleamed. Ninka turned away from the blast of its meaty breath.

‘Tender bones,’ it mused.

Ninka normally cared little for mortal playthings that were so easily broken. But Aerith was an engaging little creature, unafraid and sunny-natured. For the first time, it bothered her that innocence could be corrupted so carelessly.

Catelysma glanced her way and Ninka quickly lowered her eyes, veiling her expression. It was not wise to show too much interest or to become too attached to anything. At the Shadow Court finer emotions too swiftly became currency.

The hob was wailing piteously now. ‘Mercy. Ah, mercy,’ it sobbed.

Catelysma had laid her cheek against the fuzz of blonde hair that clothed the infant’s small skull. She lifted her chin, her face clouding. ‘Be done with that now.’

‘Ladyship.’ Tweeter clenched uneven mud-coloured teeth in an ingratiating grin. Raising the blade, he thrust hard. The hob shuddered, was silent.

Ninka would have liked to think the Dark Lady had spoken up out of pity. But she knew she was simply impatient to find out whether her latest experiment had worked. She feared, sometimes hated, the tall, slender faery who ruled uncontested over the Shadow Court, but her humble sensibilities could not help but be moved by Gentry beauty. The Dark Lady had milk-white skin, her waterfall of shifting pale green and silver hair brushed the ground behind her as she walked. Her slanted eyes were a dazzling turquoise ringed with gold, but Ninka knew how they could change in an instant.

Tweeter had filled a goblet, carved from rock crystal. He minced towards Catelysma, every inch the attendant courtier with his awkward rolling walk, as he balanced his powerful upper-body on a pair of stringy, knock-kneed legs that ended in goat’s feet.

He handed Catelysma the glass of warm red liquid. ‘I hope the flavour delights you, Ladyship. The hob, which chose to sacrifice itself for your pleasure, ate only newly sprouted wood sorrel leaves for the allotted portion of time.’

Catelysma twirled the crystal glass. She took a dainty sniff and swirled the thick liquid, before finally sipping. ‘Mmm,’ she murmured, swallowing.

Everyone waited. Nearby, another tiny hob hovered in the air, trembling, its wings shedding powdery faery dust. Kors and puckles sprawled in the grass. A boggle-eyed brownie and three slender pixies sat rigidly on a fallen log.

Tweeter shifted impatiently. ‘Good, is it, Ladyship?’ he simpered.

‘You do not have permission to speak.’ She stared coldly at him until his grin slid towards dismay and then dawning fear. Tipping the goblet, she poured the red stream onto the ground. ‘It tastes insipid. You have failed me again. What will you do to make reparation?’

Ninka saw sweat break out on Tweeter’s face. ‘A thousand pardons, Peerless One. I do not deserve your forgiveness. I shall cut strips from my skin and eat them, while dancing on hot coals. I will blind myself in one eye with a thorn…’

Catelysma gave a stifled yawn. ‘If you can’t be more inventive, do not bother.’

There were mutters and cries of disappointment from the watching host at the loss of the chance of some more entertainment.

‘Silence!’ The Dark Lady glowered. ‘You, Tweeter, will find another for my purpose. But not a hob this time.’

She cast her gaze round the assembly. Ninka steeled herself to remain still as all around her faery kind shifted nervously. Some looked rigidly at the ground. Others shrank inside their skins like fungi collapsing in a rainstorm. Black eyes, sharp faces and snouts melted further into the shadows.

‘A pixie, I think,’ Catelysma mused. ‘Instruct it to feed on violets – the flowers only.’ She fanned long fingers in the air. ‘You shall gather the flowers, dew-fresh.’

Tweeter sighed with deep relief bowing low, so that the bones of his spine showed pale through his hairy, lemon-coloured skin. ‘As you command. The sole purpose of my miserable existence is to serve you.’

Catelysma sighed, already bored. She stranded a tress of shining, silver-green hair through her fingers, fingering the strings of emeralds woven through it.

The pixies on the log seemed frozen in terror. Then one of them lost her nerve. With a strangled cry, she flexed glassy dragonfly wings. But before she could rise into the air, Tweeter’s muscular arm shot out and grasped her round her slim neck.

The pixie squeaked with terror and wet itself.

‘The next volunteer!’ Tweeter said, triumphantly.

The pixie’s long toes scrabbled at the floor and her wings clattered desperately against Tweeter’s body. He reached down and roughly tore them from her shoulders, before trampling them into glittering shards beneath his sharp hooves. Moaning faintly, the pixie was borne away towards a dark corridor with walls of woven brambles.

Ninka’s heart moved with pity, but there was nothing she could do.

The pool of hob’s blood on the moss carpet at Catelysma’s feet looked dark and syrupy. She felt slightly sick with disgust, but knew better than to reveal the fact.

‘Dismissed. All of you!’

As the rest of the court melted away into the forest, Ninka sidled behind a birch trunk, eager to be about her work. The rush matting in her forest dwelling was in need of replacement. She planned to investigate a patch of sedge along the lake’s edge in the grounds of…

‘Not you. Approach me,’ Catelysma said softly.

About the Author

Sue was born in the UK and has two grown-up sons. She grew up on a council estate and went to a church school. Books didn’t feature in the crowded house she grew up in. Sue discovered the public library at an early age, and her life-long obsession with reading was born. A fascination with the folklore of the British Isles, and all things fairy (faerie) began after discovering the world of beauty and twisted darkness in many classic fairy tales.

She was interested in a career as an artist or possibly a nurse, but left school with only modest qualifications. So she began working for Northamptonshire libraries, where she remained for many years, working part-time after starting a family. Eventually she began to teach herself the art of writing, which took far longer than she had ever imagined.

She has written over 70 books for adults and children, and numerous short stories. Her own series for 5-9 year olds, Magic Kitten, Magic Puppy, Magic Ponies and Magic Bunny are worldwide bestsellers and have been translated into many languages. Sue also contributed to existing best-selling series, Animal Ark and Rainbow Magic.

We Other is Sue’s first book for Young Adult readers.

Sue says, ‘In We Other, I’ve built a magical world where gritty reality sits side by side with fantasy. It is very dark and has elements of the fairy books I love – but with a modern twist. I’ve lived with Jess Morgan, the main character, a sensitive shy, girl beneath her tough exterior; Ivy Stark painter of nightmare scenes; Caleb Farmer who’s trying to break away from a domineering father, and many others – human and otherwise, for about 3 years. I love every one of them – faults and all.’

Sue remains fascinated by the unusual, the hidden and the unexpected in the everyday. Her work for older readers often includes elements of fantasy and psychological suspense.

She is currently at work on Second Skin, a dark fantasy novel about people who have the ability to become dragons.

She is planning a second novel set in the world of We Other, entitled, Scar You.

Sue is also an artist working in mixed-media, and a maker of mono-prints.

Dianna Gunn Keeps the Dawn

Jamie Marchant Posted on September 6, 2017 by Jamie MarchantSeptember 6, 2017 1

Dianna Gunn is a freelance writer by day and a fantasy author by night. Her debut YA fantasy novella, Keeper of the Dawn, was released in April 2017 by The Book Smugglers Publishing. She blogs about writing, creativity, and mental health at The Dabbler.

Interview

  1. Tell us a little about yourself?

Where do I begin? My three favorite things in the entire world are books, cats, and chocolate. [Jamie’s note: I could have written that.] The hubby is a close fourth, but he’s human, so he’ll never achieve the perfection of the other three 😉

I’m also Canadian, and I have deep issues with our government, but I do love this land. It’s a beautiful place, and from coast to coast we have so many different ecosystems. I’m really looking forward to the day when I can afford to explore them all (well, not all. The prairies are just cold and boring by all accounts).

2. What made you want to become a writer?

I’ve wanted to be a writer since I first discovered that “writer” could actually be a career. This happened around the time JK Rowling first hit the big time, so I guess we can blame her for my books.

I bet we’ll be hearing that a lot more as writers of my generation get published.

3. If you could have written any other book by any other author, what would it be, and why?

The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents by Terry Pratchett. It’s one of his YA books, and it uses newly-sentient rats to tackle a lot of basic ethical questions. Many of those questions wouldn’t work nearly as well with humans of any age. For example, “Should rats eat other rats” is a huge quandary throughout the book. I’m pretty sure we all know what kind of story it becomes if you ask “Should humans eat other humans?”

Also, any Terry Pratchett book at all. I am SO jealous of his ability to be funny across not just one book, but over 50.

4. Tell us something about how you write? i.e. are you a plotter or a pantser? Do you have any weird or necessary writing habits or rituals?

I’m a plantser! I always have some kind of outline—and they seem to be getting more detailed with every book—but I also discover a lot of things along the way when I start writing. I always let stories change and grow organically as I’m writing, because I believe that’s what truly living stories should do. And I do way more worldbuilding and character development than plotting.

With Nanowrimo coming up, I’m actually going to do a big novel planning series on my YouTube Channel, sharing my CURRENT outlining process with the world.

5. What is the biggest surprise that you experienced after becoming a writer?

How much more difficult editing is than writing the first draft. I can pump out a first draft in a couple months, but editing? Keeper of the Dawn was edited on and off for nearly 10 years, and Moonshadow’s Guardian, the book I plan to publish in 2018, has been around for about the same length of time. As I become a better writer, each edit takes less time, but holy crap is it exhausting!

6. Tell us a little about your plans for the future.  Do you have any other books in the works?

SO MANY BOOKS. There’s Moonshadow’s Guardian, an adult fantasy novel that combines sword and sorcery with dark fantasy elements, which I plan to release in fall 2018 (hopefully before Halloween). There’s a graphic novel I’m co-writing with a friend, which is about halfway done. And a nonfiction book I’m co-writing with another friend. And another nonfiction book I’m very, very slowly writing (and publishing large chunks of on my blog).

And that’s not even getting to the novels that I’m putting aside, so I can edit Moonshadow’s Guardian! I’ve got three super-first-drafty novels just waiting for me to get back to them and 6 more outlined.

And I’m only realizing now, as I write all this out, how crazy it sounds! Here’s hoping I can get all those projects out into the world in a reasonable amount of time.

7. What is your dream vacation?

A week exploring Iceland, followed by an entire summer exploring the UK. And an extra week off when I get home to deal with travel fatigue because my last travel vacation burnt me out pretty bad. When you’re busy trying to see EVERYTHING because you won’t be back for 10 years, you spend a lot of time running around. It’s great, but you don’t really feel like you had a vacation at the end.

Where can we find you online?

Keeper of the Dawn

Sometimes failure is just the beginning

All Lai has ever wanted is to become a priestess, like her mother and grandmother before her, in service to their beloved goddess. That’s before the unthinkable happens, and Lai fails the trials she has trained for her entire life. She makes the only choice she believes she can: she runs away.

From her isolated desert homeland, Lai rides north to the colder, stranger kingdom of Alanum—a land where magic, and female warriors, are not commonplace.

Here, she hears tales about a mountain city of women guardians and steel forgers, worshiping goddesses who sound very similar to Lai’s own. Determined to learn more about these women, these Keepers of the Dawn, Lai travels onward to find their temple. She is determined to make up for her past failure, and will do whatever it takes to join their sacred order.

Falling in love with another initiate was not part of the plan.

Keeper of the Dawn is a tale of new beginnings, second chances, and the endurance of hope.

Twins: The Dragon’s Dove Chronicles by Kim Iverson Headlee

Jamie Marchant Posted on September 4, 2017 by Jamie MarchantSeptember 3, 2017

TWINS

The Dragon’s Dove Chronicles, the novella genesis of book 6

by Kim Iverson Headlee

Genre: Epic Historical Fantasy

From the award-winning, critically acclaimed pen of Kim Iverson Headlee comes the fall of Camelot as you have never seen it before.

The death of their mother knells the death of any hope for a joyful future for Gyan’s identical twin daughters, Gwenhwyfar and Gwenhwyfach. Their father, Arthur the High King, wastes no time in announcing firstborn Gwenhwyfar’s betrothal to Medraut—the man whom Gwenhwyfach secretly loves. And Gwenhwyfar is in love with Angusel’s son Lannchu.

The twins conspire to defy Fate and trade places. They know how ambitious is their scheme, for Gwenhwyfar is trained in the domestic arts and Gwenhwyfach has chosen the warrior’s path, yet the sisters are confident of success. The wedding and its accompanying night come off without a hitch… for both of them.

Fate, however, shall not be defied.

Incorporating ancient Welsh legends of the “False Guinevere” and “Feasting the Hungry Man,” and featuring many characters introduced in Dawnflight, Morning’s Journey, and Raging Sea, this glimpse into their destiny, thirty years after the setting of those novels, reveals the destruction of Arthur’s realm that’s unique in all of Arthurian literature.

Praise for other Arthurian works by Kim Iverson Headlee:

“Intense.” USA Today (Dawnflight)

“Solidly entertaining.” Publishers Weekly (King Arthur’s Sister in Washington’s Court)

He crushed her to him with startling force, thrusting his tongue into her mouth to probe its secrets. Too soon, he shifted his focus to her chin, her throat, her neck, each kiss torturing her with promises that could never be kept. A raw blend of pleasure and pain forced a moan from her lips.

“It would be best to remain a virgin for your wedding night,” said a new voice.

With a startled cry, Gwenhwyfar straightened and looked about. Hand to dagger, Lannchu whirled. When the intruder stepped from behind a nearby piling, Lannchu folded his arms.

“Gwenhwyfach.” Gwenhwyfar didn’t care how her sister had found them; the pertinent question was why. “Don’t expect me to bid you well come, because you aren’t.”

Gwenhwyfach tossed her braids, uttering a light chuckle. “Not even if I were to give you the solution to your dilemma?”

“What would you do? Guard our backs as we run away?” A romantic notion, but not a feasible one. “Father would kill us all. If Medraut didn’t find us first.”

“You’re right. My plan is simpler.” She extended her open-palmed hand. “We trade places.”

I have to confess, the names were a tangle for me.

But that aside, I never got lost. This is a short but packed full of content delight.

I was shocked many times in this story.

There appears to be a chance for love. Two twins, one experienced with a sword and the other experienced running the castle decide to switch identities so each can have the one they love.

Kim Headless puts so much into her stories. Even this short story is filled with so many court intrigues.

Dawnflight ✯ Morning’s Journey ✯ The Color of Vengeance

Raging Sea: Reckonings ✯ Raging Sea: Enemies and Allies ✯ The Challenge

Kim Headlee lives on a farm in southwestern Virginia with her family, cats, goats, Great Pyrenees goat guards, and assorted wildlife. People and creatures come and go, but the cave and the 250-year-old house ruins—the latter having been occupied as recently as the mid-twentieth century—seem to be sticking around for a while yet. She has been an award-winning novelist since 1999 (Dawnflight first edition, Sonnet Books, Simon & Schuster) and has been studying the Arthurian Legends for nigh on half a century.
